The red panda is the ORIGINAL panda. It was first described in 1821, 48 years before the giant panda was found. Like giant pandas, red pandas have an extra “thumb,” which is an enlarged bone for grabbing bamboo stems. A red panda eats approximately 200,000 bamboo leaves daily. They are red and black color camouflages them from their predators. The red on their backs is exactly the same color as moss found on the trees where they live. The black on their stomach makes it difficult to see them from below.
Their natural habitat is being demolished by people wishing to spread agriculture and people who fell trees for loggers.

Such a beautiful animal and I sure did love reading about it with your fantastic story. We humans do seem to love destroying the habitat of so many wonderful animals in the name of progress. So sad, but a beautiful picture. #11493671Patrick Rouzes July 10, 2016
Got to love the capture of that adorable face, Kathy. Haven't heard of the Red Panda, and thanks for the fascinating info. It's outrageous how man continues to destroy everything on our planet. #11494169Teresa L. Brooks July 11, 2016
