Black Swallowtail
Uploaded: July 12, 2010 03:20:21
I thought this little guy was sticking his tongue out at me, but after a little research I learned that this caterpillar has a special gland called an osmeterium that emits a foul odor when the caterpillar is threatened. The orange osmeterium looks like a forked snake tongue. Guess he didn't like having his photo taken. 100mm macro, f/16, 1/125, ISO 100
Exif: F Number: 16, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/125 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 200, White balance: Auto white balance, FocalLength: 100.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS 50D

Very cool macro! #8752307Nikki McDonald July 13, 2010
Wonderful macro, Nancy, one of the clearest I have seen. I think this is a black swallowtail butterfly caterpillar. If it's on one of your plants (dill? parsley?), you will want to keep an eye on it so you can possibly see the butterfly emerge. Heather Pickard just watched one emerge and got some wonderful images that you can enjoy in New Images on her page. #8760216Shirley A. Kinney July 14, 2010
