~STUBBLE FIRE~ [Contest Winner Pool July 2008 Man Made Things]
Uploaded: July 15, 2008 05:13:42
HAVE A TERRIFIC TUESDAY!!!!!
Alot of farmers will burn off
wheat stubble after harvesting
the wheat in order
to plant another summer growing
crop such as soybeans, which is a
great crop rotation plan.
That is what we are doing here
on our two irrigated circles....
that is my father-in-law in the tractor
disking beside the fire so it
won't spread where it shouldn't.....

Terrific shots and explanation Jeana! I've seen these fires close I70 out in the grassy hills due to an unexpected wind shift. It looks like dangerous work to me!! #6182319Bojan Bencic July 15, 2008

Nikki McDonald July 15, 2008
Beautiful, frightening, dramatic, interesting -- this capture is all of those and more, Jeana. I can't help wondering why he didn't do the disking before you started the fire? #6183190Jeana Clark July 15, 2008
Thanks so much everyone!!
Your thoughts and comments are so appreciated!!!!
Nikki...in answer to you question....if the stubble wasn't burned off...it would require the tractor and disk to work the ground many times over to get proper planting conditions. Saves money on diesel fuel and the crop gets planted that much quicker. Hope that helped!! :o)
THANKS AGAIN ALL!!!!
ENJOY THE AFTERNOON!!!!
~J~ #6183228
Nikki McDonald July 15, 2008
I just meant why didn't he pre-determine the area that you wanted to burn and disk around it then so it wouldn't spread rather than waiting until the fire was burning to create the fire break. #6183281Jeana Clark July 15, 2008

Thanks for the added info, Jeana. I feel better now :) #6183896Dawn M. Schneider July 15, 2008
wow what an intense capture!! I was trying to come up with a word and someone previously said intense and that is it!! I was born in iowa and now in illinois, but have never seen this. where is this? #6184149Ken Smith July 15, 2008
I can't decide which I like best...both convey a sense of fury with the smoke, and the magnitude of the smoke in relation to the tractor. And "disking"? I learn a new word every day!! Excellent work, Jeana! #6184285BILLY R. PARKER July 15, 2008
JEANA, LOVE THE WAY YOUR IMAGES TELL A STORY !! GREAT JOB !! BILLY #6184383Denny E. Barnes July 15, 2008
Excellent capture of this fire and smoke scene, Jeana!!! Our grass seed harvest is in full swing now and it won`t be long before they burn the fields to sterilize the ground for next years harvest. There are fewer fields burned each year and it won`t be long before it`s a thing of the past but they are fun to watch now....Denny #6184556A P July 16, 2008
I just love the smoke in the background yet the tractor is bright and uneffected by it all. Great capture, Jeana #6188534Susan Weisensel July 17, 2008
Wow Jeana girl that is some kind of smoke. Super detail and color on this one.I never knew they did that. #6190976Martha N. Church July 17, 2008
